When I wrote the book, “Dig Mama’s Swagger” the idea that I focused on, is that young girls often look at celebrities as role models. When in reality, Mama is one of the most influential role models. Mama is spiritual, works hard and is well educated. When women of color read this book, they should see themselves in the main character. Mama is taking the time to build character, integrity and achievement in herself and her daughter. After all, children will model what they see, more than what they hear. Every African-American woman should see herself in at least one of the representations of Mama in this book. I wonder who her daughter will grow up to be.
